General Information
The Des Moines Interfaith Hospitality Network (DMIHN) is a coalition of 13 local religious congregations that provide shelter, meals, and case management services for Polk County families with children that are experiencing homelessness. For one week each quarter, each of the 13 host congregation provides families with private rooms for sleeping as well as supper and breakfast on-site, and food for packing a sack lunch each day. Guests are provided a safe, secure place to be during the day at a Day Center that is located at Westminister Presbyterian church. At the Day Center, guests have access to showers and laundry facilities as well as a telephone with answering machine, daily newspapers, and the Internet to assist in their employment and housing services. St. Stephen's Work with the Interfaith Hospitality Network
Our church was one of the original host congregations to support DMIHN when it began offering services in October of 2004. As a host congregation, we provide shelter and meals once a week each quarter for up to 14 people. As you might expect, this ministry requires lots of organization and many volunteers!
Our organization for DMIHN begins approximately one month prior to our host week when a large whiteboard is placed in the narthex that details volunteer opportunities and provides sign-up space. We have the following specific volunteer needs during each host week:
- Drivers to transport guests to and from the Day Center in the morning and late afternoon
- Hosts to serve dinner and provide a hospitable evening environment for our guests
- Two people to stay overnight at the church each evening
- Saturday morning hosts for breakfast
- People to provide menu items for evening meals and breakfasts
